How to Apply

All applicants to the MASc, MEng and PhD programs must apply through the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Application System.

Submit an application and pay the application fee (which is mandatory, non-refundable and non-transferrable, regardless of circumstances).

For each university degree program you have successfully completed, attempted or are currently completing, scan and upload a complete official post-secondary institutional transcript as a pdf file. Each transcript must include its respective grading scale (often found on the backside of the transcript). Note that high school transcripts are not required.

  1. If prompted, and if appropriate, enter your English language proficiency test score. If you entered an English language proficiency score (IELTS, COPE, TOEFL or the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies Academic Preparation Course), you must arrange for the testing service to forward your results to the University of Toronto. Once the results have been submitted to the University, MSE will have access to those results. You are NOT required to submit hardcopy results. We will not consider applications until these scores have been received by the University. TOEFL Institution code is 0982.
  2. Provide contact information for two referees only. Referee email addresses must be institution-based (i.e. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etcetera will not be recognized by the system). The SGS admission system will automatically contact your referees to provide instructions on how to upload their references. Hardcopy references are not required.
  3. For MASc and PhD, write a brief “Research Proposal/Research Statement” in which you describe your specific academic interests (state which professors are doing research which interests you most). You will be able to upload this document after submission/payment of your application.

Finally, please upload scanned copies of your transcripts to the application site.  MSE will request official, hard-copy transcripts to be forwarded to us directly from the issuing institution. These transcripts will be required as a condition for any offer of admission, but may also be requested in other cases. Do NOT have original hard-copies sent to the MSE Department unless you have been requested by MSE to do so

Note that applications for the MSE MASc, MEng, and PhD programs are reviewed by the Department of MSE, only. Also note that since admission into the MASc and PhD programs is extremely competitive, we are able to offer admission to only a small number of applicants. MASc and PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to contact professors with whom they would like to work, either before or after submitting an application.

Review and assessment of applications begin after the stated deadline.
