On Friday, April 4th, the Materials Science & Engineering department was filled with energy and innovation as third-year students unveiled their MSE 397 design projects in a lively and inspiring Design Showcase.
The event offered students the opportunity to present the results of a semester’s worth of creativity, collaboration, and hands-on problem solving. Faculty, staff, fellow students, and even Dean Yip, dropped in to explore a wide range of innovative prototypes that reflected the technical skill, imagination, and dedication of the third-year cohort.
Projects on display included everything from a submarine, hovercraft, winter boot to hydrofoil, utility cart, and anti-spill mixing cup. Other creative entries featured an insulating phone case, music box, golf club, 4-bowl dish, zeppelin, and Peltier effect cup—each one showcasing a unique approach to solving real-world design challenges in materials engineering.
Visitors had the chance to speak with the student teams, ask questions, and get a firsthand look at the creativity and technical thinking that went into each project.
Following the showcase, students gathered in the Undergraduate Common Room to present a surprise gift to the course instructor and event organizer, Prof. Scott Ramsay, in appreciation of his exceptional dedication and support throughout MSE396 and MSE397. The custom-made gift featured a laser-cut image of an engineering drawing from the class’s first-semester project, framed in acrylic and surrounded by class photos.
