Congratulations to our PhD Candidate, Eric Nicholson, for receiving the 2021 Journal of Endodontics (JOE) Publication Award in the category of Basic Research: Technology.
The JOE Publication Awards is presented to authors of published papers in the Journal of Endodontics that represent innovative thought and significant advances in endodontics. Eric was the co-author of the paper titled” “Microtissue Engineering Root Dentin with Photodynamically Cross-linked Nanoparticles Improves Fatigue Resistance of Endodontically Treated Teeth.” J Endod 46(5): 668-674.
“We used nanoindentation to measure the mechanical properties of intertubular dentin in human teeth, to help show that the application of photodynamically cross-linked chitosan nanoparticles in a typical root canal treatment can improve the tooth’s resistance to fatigue loads and therefore improve the expected outcome of the endodontic procedure.”, said Eric. “The low-force loading and small interaction volume accessed by nanoindentation allows for measurement of the effect of the chemical treatment on the surface of a delicately microstructured biological material.”
Eric’s thesis is in radiation materials science and is co-supervised by Prof. Chandra Singh (MSE) and Prof. James Davis (UTIAS).
