Lawrence Zhu is the Head R&D of APAC region at Oetiker Group, a multidisciplinary Swiss manufacturing firm that specializes in automotive and industrial applications for more than 80 years.

Zhu started in Oetiker’s Canada plant in Alliston, Ontario, as a process engineer after graduating from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering. In his role, Zhu focuses on manufacturing processes with stainless steel for critical vehicle components, while developing his leadership and management skills. Soon after joining the company, Zhu became the subject matter expert of certain proprietary technologies in Oetiker group and organized an university-industrial research project with MSE under Mitacs between 2020 and 2021.

Zhu received his Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Materials Engineering from U of T in 2012, shortly before he won the third place prize in the student poster contest of the AIST 2012 Conference with a project titled “Computer Simulation and Quality Assessment of EMS Improved HSLA Steels” under the supervision of Professor McLean and late Professor YD Yang. He is now pursing his MBA degree from the Rotman School of Management at U of T with an exchange term in the Tsinghua University of Beijing.
