Troy Lassau, former High School and Industrial Liaison Officer with the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) passed away on June 10th, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.
Troy will be sorely missed by the MSE Department and those who knew him. After obtaining his Master of Science from the University of British Columbia in 1972, Troy spent many years in material science and engineering research at Chemex Ltd., McMaster University, and ORTECH Corporation. Troy was the first High School and Industrial Liaison Officer with the MSE department at U of T (then called the Department of Metallurgy & Materials Science) — a position he held from 1996 to his retirement in 2005.
Troy’s commendable skills in public relations and business development propelled him to bridge gaps in science and engineering between education, industry and government. He was honoured with the Halton Industry Education Council’s Volunteer of the Year award in 1996.
“Troy got along very well with MSE faculty and students,” says Professor Alex McLean, former Chair of the Department. “He made many industry connections during his years at ORTECH and through his involvement with professional associations. He was an immense help to our students who were looking for summer or post-graduation employment.”
During his time with the MSE Department, Troy organized many industry plant tours and encouraged students to become involved in the large number of professional associations relating to materials science & engineering in the area. Troy led by example — he served on technical committees and was involved with numerous professional associations, including the ASM International Ontario Chapter, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), NACE International, and the Materials Advisory Committee. Troy also served as Chair of the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS).
“Troy’s extensive experience with several industrial sectors coupled with his gentle and calm demeanour helped to prepare numerous students for many exciting employment opportunities,” says MSE Professor and former Chair Doug Perovic. “Troy set the standard for liaison activities in MSE helping advance the strategic mission of the Department for years to come.”
