Coatings & Surfaces

Overview

The structure and chemistry of a material surface can be modified for a wide range of material properties and applications, such as catalysis, corrosion, bio-fouling (bacteria growth or marine organisms), wetting, adhesion and hardness. Coatings are an important strategy to modify material surfaces, such as thermal barrier coatings, ultra-high hardness surfaces or antimicrobial coatings for medical devices.

Research Topics

  • Bacterial contamination of surfaces and biofouling
  • Nanoporous layers for catalytic reaction
  • Non-wetting and non-adhesive surfaces
  • Active surface topographies
  • Surface chemistry, PEO, corrosion protection
  • Surface modification of carbon electrodes
  • Surface structure studies using scanned probe microscopy
  • Thermal spray coatings
