MSE Alumna Talks Small Modular Reactors and Fusion Innovation

As part of the Ursula Franklin Graduate Seminar Series, the Department of Materials Science & Engineering hosted Michelle Ireland, M.Eng., P.Eng., Materials Technology Director at Kinectrics Inc. and proud alumna of our department, for an insightful talk on Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs) and Fusion Industries.

Michelle discussed the growing demand for clean, reliable energy and the role of nuclear power in meeting future needs. She explored the current state of SMR and fusion industries, focusing on North America and the UK, and highlighted the challenges these technologies face in their path to commercialization.

With over 18 years of experience in CANDU nuclear consulting, Michelle shared her expertise in materials technology, offering valuable insights into the future of nuclear energy.
