Benjamin Shi MSE  PhD 2T4
Senior Machine Engineer, Autoalign

Benjamin Shi completed his PhD in Materials Science & Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Jane Y. Howe and Prof. R.J. Dwayne Miller (Physics Department). His doctoral research focused on developing novel deep learning and computer vision methods for electron microscopy, including object detection, image classification, image segmentation, 3D reconstruction, and image denoising. His work applied these methods across diverse fields, including environmental science (microplastics), biology, and materials science (carbon nanotubes), and culminated in his thesis: Deep Neural Networks for Image Processing and Biomolecular Single-Particle 3D Reconstruction from Electron Micrographs.

After graduation, Benjamin joined the Vector Institute FastLane Program and contributed as a Machine Learning Associate at AutoAlign AI, working on multi-modal RAG/LLM chatbots for technical support and troubleshooting. He currently serves as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at AutoAlign, developing the Visor Guide, a real-time multimodal AI assistant for industrial SOPs, focusing on backend development and MLOps.
