Strengthening Connections with Canada’s Nuclear Sector

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering recently welcomed Gina Strati from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and Karen Huynh from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) for a visit focused on strengthening collaboration between academia and Canada’s nuclear sector.

Organized by the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, the visit included meetings with faculty members and university leaders across the Faculty, including Chris Yip, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. During their visit, the guests attended presentations highlighting cutting-edge research taking place at the University of Toronto with relevance to the nuclear industry.

Strati and Huynh also shared an overview of the work being done at CNL and AECL, offering insights into their organizations’ missions, ongoing initiatives, and the evolving needs of Canada’s nuclear sector. The discussion provided valuable perspectives on how academic research and industry priorities can align to address emerging challenges and opportunities.

The visit also opened conversations around potential collaboration in research, education, and training, as well as future career opportunities for students. These discussions reflect the department’s ongoing commitment to connecting students with industry partners and preparing the next generation of professionals for careers in the nuclear field.

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering looks forward to continued engagement with CNL and AECL and to building meaningful partnerships that create impactful opportunities for both students and faculty.
