SUMMARY:Invited Talk - Materials Space-Tectonics: A New Paradigm for Designing Next-Generation Nanoporous Materials for Energy and Biomedical Applications
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Shahriar Hossain (The University of Queensland\, School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering\, joint appointment at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology) \nLocation: Lassonde Mining Building (MB) Room 101 \nAbstract: In this talk\, Professor Shahriar Hossain will introduce the mission and vision behind “Materials Nanotectonics”—a pioneering conceptual framework for designing advanced functional inorganic nanospace materials. This new paradigm focuses on engineering high-surface-area nanoporous materials that offer abundant functional sites\, enhancing performance across a range of critical applications\, including energy storage\, catalysis\, targeted drug delivery\, and biosensing. Recent advancements in soft templating\, using amphiphilic surfactants and block copolymers\, have enabled the creation of mesoporous structures in diverse materials like metals\, metal oxides\, and carbon-based compounds. Notably\, mesoporous metals are particularly promising for electrocatalysis\, as their complex porous networks reveal a multitude of unsaturated atoms on high-index facets\, offering exceptional catalytic activity. During this talk\, he will discuss the design strategies\, synthesis and characterization of these nanoengineered porous materials—specifically those with magnetic\, electronic\, and plasmonic properties—and explore their potential applications in supercapacitors\, precision drug delivery\, and biosensing technologies. \nBio: Dr. Shahriar Hossain is an Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering\, with a joint appointment at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at The University of Queensland (UQ). As Co-Director of the Australian Centre of Materials Nanotectonics\, he leads multiple interdisciplinary research teams\, making significant advances in the fields of materials science\, magnetism\, and applied superconductivity. Recognized as a global leader in his field\, Dr. Hossain’s pioneering work has significantly advanced the development of nano-engineered electronic\, magnetic\, and superconducting materials\, driving innovations in applications such as MRI\, power cables\, fusion magnets\, and biosensors.\n\nDr. Hossain’s research excellence is backed by prestigious awards/fellowships/funding\, including the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)\, the Strategic Research Fellowship from the Australian Academy of Sciences\, and the Priming and Bridging Grant from the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering. His contributions have also been acknowledged with the Vice-Chancellor’s Emerging Researcher Excellence Award and the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellent Industry Partnership Award from the University of Wollongong (UOW).\n\nIn addition to his role at UQ\, Dr. Hossain has held visiting scholar and professor positions at renowned institutions worldwide\, including the University of Geneva (Switzerland)\, Ohio State University (USA)\, National Institute for Materials Science (Japan)\, Nagoya University (Japan)\, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany)\, Institute of High Pressure Physics (Poland)\, Universitas Indonesia\, and the Institute of Technology Bandung (Indonesia).\n\nTo date\, he has published over 250 high-impact\, SCI-indexed journal articles with his work attracting over 14\,000 citations and an impressive H-index of 63 (according to the google scholar)\, setting him as a highly influential researcher in the scientific community.\n\nMore details in UQ profile – https://about.uq.edu.au/experts/21171
