Each year, we celebrate the successes and accomplishments of all our graduates at Convocation. Below are several alumni from the Class of MSE 1T2 whose hard work and determination have given them distinction.

In 1973, the Centennial Thesis Awards were established in honour of the 100 year anniversary of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto. The award recognizes excellence in final year thesis work in each of the Faculty’s nine (9) undergraduate programs.

This year’s award went to Ms Colleen Shang and Ms Jingnan (Kaylen) Wang for their work in investigating the use of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) films to optimize the imaging surface in forensic fingerprinting devices. Their work is titled “Photo-Induced Hydrophilicity of TiO₂ Thin Films” and was supervised by Associate Professor Thomas W. Coyle.

The NACE International (Toronto Section) Prize recognizes a final year student in any discipline of engineering who has completed a thesis on the subject of corrosion science and engineering with distinctive quality.

This year’s prize went to Mr David J. Miklas for this thesis work titled “Effects of Processing Parameters on the Corrosion of Friction Stir Spot Welds in AZ31.” Miklas was co-supervised by Professor Steven J. Thorpe and Professor Emeritus Thomas H. North.

David's brother, Jason Miklas (MSE 1T1), was the recipient of the Centennial Thesis Award and the W. S. Wilson Medal in 2011.

The W. S. Wilson Medal is provided by the Engineering Alumni Association in recognition of service of its former Assistant Dean & Secretary, William Stewart Wilson, of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.

Since 1963, the Medal has been awarded to the student in each engineering discipline who has achieved the highest academic standing in the final year of their program. This year’s top graduating student of the Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Materials Engineering program is Ms Colleen Shang.

We are especially pleased about the recognition that Colleen, David, and Kaylen have received for their outstanding accomplishments," says Professor Jun Nogami, Chair. "All of you have worked very hard to finish your degrees. We wish you every success in the future; go out there and make us proud!"
